Teaching of letter sound/p/
Letter sound p is the second last sound in group one of jolly phonics to recap, the letter sound in book one are s,a,t,I,by showing flash cards
Story
I usually include the story from the jolly phonics teacher book or from jolly stories.these stories are easier to relate to the picture in the jolly phonics pupils book.
Action
Hold up a finger as if it is a candle, and pretend to puff it out, saying p,p,p,p, student can play I will blow you down game.
Formation
I realized that kids draw a line and a circle to form letter p.
Practice writing first on pupils book then in notebook.

Blending
Blend the words, pit, pat, tap , tip
Now kids are able to break down the words in to it’s individual sounds and sound it out.
To encourage phonemic awareness l ‘ll gradually introduce more rhyms .

Teaching the Letter Sound /p/: Simplified Explanation
1. Review Previously Learned Sounds:
Use flashcards to revise the sounds /s/, /a/, /t/, and /i/ that students have already learned.
2. Introduce the Sound /p/ with a Story:
Share a story to help students associate the /p/ sound with context. For example:
• A boy has a birthday party where he opens presents, plays games, and tries to blow out trick candles that keep relighting. Everyone keeps puffing the candles out, saying /p, p, p/.
Name items from the story that start with /p/ (e.g., presents, party, puffs).
3. Action for the Sound:
Pretend to puff out a candle by holding your finger near your mouth and saying /p, p, p/.
4. Letter Formation:
Teach how to write the letter p step-by-step:
• Start at the top, draw a straight line down.
• Go back up and draw a curve from the top of the line to make the “head.”
Practice:
• Air trace the letter with fingers.
• Use sensory materials like a salt tray for tracing.
• Write over dotted lines in books, followed by independent writing.
5. Blending Words:
Write simple words like pat on the board.
• Show sound buttons under each letter to indicate individual sounds.
• Students sound out each letter, then blend them together.
• Practice blending other words such as pit, pat, tip, tap with teacher guidance.
6. Identifying the Sound in Words:
Show pictures of items (e.g., pie, parrot, pencil, tortoise).
• Ask students to name each picture.
• Identify which word does not have the /p/ sound (tortoise) and mark it with a cross.
7. Word Bank Practice:
Provide words like pit, pat, sip, sap, pip, tap for reading and recognition.
8. Dictation:
• Call out sounds (e.g., /p/ and previously learned sounds) for students to write.
• Say words from the word bank and ask students to count the sounds by holding up a finger for each.
By following this sequence, students practice recognizing, writing, blending, and using the /p/ sound effectively.
